National Take a Hike day on November 17
National Take a Hike day was established to recognize the more than 60,000 miles of trails in the National Trails system. The word that comes to mind when I think about 60,000 miles of trails is appreciation. It would be a sad state if we had to forge our own trails to experience nature and all its wonder. So I give whole-hearted thanks to all those hard-working people that made the trail system what it is today.
And on that note, what better way to honor this trail system than by taking a hike. And really, any day of the year works, not just the official day. But, if you are game for a hike this time of year, you can take it up a notch, by making it a kick-off to your holiday season. You’ll get a great big energetic mental and physical boost before all that wonderful merrymaking takes over.
Here in the Pacific Northwest you can still take a late-fall hike for a couple of weeks. Many areas of the Cascade mountains offer access to lowland trails. Those that follow rivers are especially pretty and easy to access. Most leaves are on the ground, but crunching sounds under your boots, pungent earth smells, and the mellow glow of late afternoon sun will slip you into a gentle space of appreciation. Afterwards, let the merrymaking begin! Reward yourself with a little trailhead tailgating like we did a couple of years ago. Think savory turkey, cranberry, and brie sandwiches with a lovely Pinot Noir. It was a grand end to a beautiful hike.
If the weather or access is a deterrent, a long walk will give you the same mental boost. Urban Japanese gardens, arboretums, and botanical gardens offer trails with stunning year-round displays. Or, you can always hike through a large urban park. Our Seattle parks feature lots of twisting paths, stair climbs, and deep ravines crossed by boardwalks.
In my book, hiking in nature is wonderful any time of the year. If you can swing it now, it’s a delightful way to start the holidays. Being surrounded by natural beauty makes it easy to give thanks for all of the goodness that we have in our lives.
Happy Thanksgiving!
